Feel the lift under your wings as we explore the amazing phenomenon of Hawk Migration in Western North Carolina. Would you believe that we have up to 14 species of Raptors that pass through our area during the months of September through November? Learn where they go, how far, some great ID tips for Hawks in flight, and how to predict the peak of our most numerous species – the Broad-winged Hawk, which can be seen passing through in numbers as high as several thousand in one day.
Vicky Burke started birdwatching in Massachusetts at the age of 10 and has never stopped! She moved to Western North Carolina in 1996 and discovered that it was a fantastic area for birding. Henderson County alone can yield over 200 species each year for an active birder. One of Vicky's greatest joys is coordinating the Mt. Pisgah Hawkwatch off the Blue Ridge Parkway, where she has observed the migration of up to 14 species of hawks (and up to 10,000 individuals) each fall.
