UNC Press, TNCA & Malaprop's Presents: Climate Change Gardening for the South: Planet-Friendly Solutions for Thriving Gardens

ONLINE | Friday, October 21, 6 - 7 p.m.

Instructor: Barbara J. Sullivan

Free | Suggested Donation $12

Gardeners are becoming increasingly committed to learning about climate change -- both how it will affect them and what they can do in response. Starting with a basic outline of climate change and the naturally occurring ecoregions in the Southeast, the book goes on to address dozens of ways in which readers can make their gardens more climate-friendly and ways of dealing with increased threats of flooding, drought, heat waves and other climate-related challenges. Sullivan presents detailed, easy-to-follow information on climate-friendly garden design, wise water use, soil health and how to attract songbirds and pollinators to the garden. She emphasizes the importance of using native plants to create more resilient, wildlife friendly landscapes and provides suggestions for hundreds of Southeastern natives appropriate for a variety of conditions. In addition to warning against the dangers of toxic chemicals and invasive exotic plants, Sullivan also shares a host of positive, inspiring steps gardeners can take to help become part of the solution. This is the first book focused on climate change gardening in the Southeast and one that assembles all of the practical aspects of climate-friendly gardening into one volume.
