Course Capacity: 20

2 hour credit | BRN Elective - Plant Studies | BREG Elective - Plant Studies

Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative for a demonstration and presentation to learn the fundamentals of treating hemlock trees to protect them from the invasive insect, hemlock woolly adelgid. The class will take place on Tuesday, February 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before!

Participants will practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options, and HRI staff will demonstrate chemical treatment. We will use the trees on-site to demonstrate and explain a variety of methods available to all landowners in North Carolina. We will also discuss environmental considerations and hiring a tree care professional.  Questions about class content should be directed to Ally Melrose at education@savehemlocksnc.org.

Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) staff work to restore eastern and Carolina hemlocks to their native habitats throughout North Carolina and to mitigate damage to hemlocks caused by infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA).

Thom Green is the outreach and landowner support manager for the Hemlock Restoration Initiative. He holds an MS in Biology from Western Carolina University where his studies focused on forest ecology of the Southern Appalachians. He has worked for HRI since 2017 carrying out hemlock conservation on public lands and educating landowners about protecting their own hemlocks. Thom’s passion for ecosystem-based forest management fuels his work with HRI and the effort to save North Carolina’s remaining hemlocks.

Ally Melrose is the AmeriCorps Stewardship and Conservation Education Associate at the Hemlock Restoration Initiative. She grew up in Waynesville, NC, and after spending a couple of years living out west, she has returned to work in the mountains of her childhood. Ally has served on conservation crews in Arizona and also has experience in experiential outdoor education. savehemlocksnc.org
