Learn about bird migration in North Carolina. Migration peaks in spring and fall, but, in reality, there are birds migrating 365 days a year. When birds migrate depends on many factors, including bird species, migration distance, travel speed, route, climate and more. We’ll discuss who migrates and who does not, where they spend the winter and who nests here and who is simply passing through. We’ll also take a look at when we can expect certain birds to arrive in the spring.
Aaron Steed has been interested in birds and natural history his entire life. Originally from Wilmington, N.C., Aaron holds a B.S. in General Biology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and has worked numerous ornithological field positions in North Carolina, Texas, Kansas, California and Arizona, focusing primarily on endangered or imperiled species (such as the Black-capped Vireo and Lesser Prairie-Chicken). He currently leads classes in the field and online for Ventures Birding Tours and for the Arboretum.
