Western North Carolina’s lush mountain forests are home to dozens of species of trees. Participants in this field-based class will use the Arboretum forest as a great learning laboratory to consider ways to identify many of the area’s tree species based on habitats, individual characteristics, including eaves, and their uses both by humans and wildlife. Students should dress comfortably for the weather and be able to make short walks on moderate and some uphill terrain without assistance. Participants should bring a hand lens and field journals to record observations!
Carlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. Carlton co-hosts a weekly radio program NATURE NEWS and is also a NC state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
