Bonsai Styling Demonstration with Arthur Joura

Description

ONSITE | Sunday, March 10, 2 - 4 p.m.

Instructor: Arthur Joura

Free | Suggested Donation $12

Limit: 80

Many specimens in The North Carolina Arboretum bonsai collection were donated in non-showable condition. That is to say, when we received these trees they were in development as bonsai but not quite there yet. The value of these plants was in their age, with the need for a design plan and refinement being what was lacking. In bonsai, accumulated age is worth something! In this program, Arboretum Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura will look at three bonsai specimens currently in similar non-showable condition and discuss each in detail. Then all three will be pruned and set on a course toward better design and refinement. This program is presented in collaboration with the local Blue Ridge Bonsai Society. There will be plenty of information for club members and others already familiar with bonsai technique, but people who are simply curious to learn more about bonsai in general are welcomed, too. A person needn't be a bonsai grower to be a bonsai appreciator. Interested participants, however, are asked to register in advance to ensure seating in our Education Center space.

Arthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum's collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify -- one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains -- creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country.
