UNC Press, TNCA & Malaprop's Present: A Book Talk with Robert Brunk on A Question of Value

Description

ONLINE | Thursday, March 14, 6 - 7 p.m.

Presenter: Robert Brunk

Free | Suggested Donation $12

Limit: 30

In the late 1970s, Robert Brunk discovered the world of auctioneering. Drawn to the unique mountain culture and the history of fine art in and around Asheville, Bob started a business, Brunk Auctions, that grew to offer the finest examples of American and European art. America's passion for collecting, buying, and selling reached remarkable heights in the following decades. Auction houses and antiques stores thrived; people paid hundreds of dollars for a humble country basket and thousands for a rare piece of folk art. In this recent collection of essays, published by UNC Press, Bob considers specific items and remarkable situations he encountered in his long and successful work as an auctioneer and appraiser. He presents objects as invitations to consider personal and collective histories often related to unresolved social inequities. Join us in an online conversation with the author and co-hosts from UNC Press and Malaprop’s to consider A Question of Value and also reflect with Bob about  a career that often came in conflict with his Mennonite upbringing and the complexities of ownership and value. Both the book and the conversation will have listeners reflecting on the ways we live with objects—and what it brings out in us when we decide it’s time to let them go.

Robert Brunk also authored the acclaimed two-volume May We All Remember Well: A Journal of the History & Cultures of Western North Carolina. In addition to a long career as an auctioneer and appraiser, his writing has been widely published and listed as Notable in Best American Essays. He is the founder of Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N.C.
