Many of us yearn for kinship with the natural world. Contemplative photography offers us a path. The camera you carry in your pocket or bag can become a powerful tool for reimagining your relationships and deepening your intimacy and connection with the places you love. During this creative retreat, Susan Patrice will share unique contemplative photography practices designed to awaken curiosity and wonder. We will use our cameras to explore the magical place that is The North Carolina Arboretum, nestled in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. We will celebrate the visual wonders of nature while finding creative nourishment and inspiration within this protected and loved landscape. As we practice together, our photographs will come alive with new meaning and beauty. Together we will contemplate how photography can become a powerful tool for visual stewardship by deepening our capacity for seeing, knowing, and caring for a place. Open to photographers of all levels; even seasoned practitioners should find value in this unique approach to the medium.

This contemplative photography workshop includes the Artists Talk on Friday, March 15, from 5 - 6:30 p.m., and a full day at the Arboretum on Saturday, March 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Susan Patrice is a documentary photographer, community artist, and founder of Makers Circle. She recently launched Kinship Photography Collective, a global community of practice designed to create rich visual conversations that explore the intimate connections between nature, culture and belonging. Susan's own photography and public installations focus primarily on the Southern Landscape and its people and feature intimate images that touch deeply into the questions of place, gender, and belonging.
