Plants have many amazing abilities: they make their own food, pull water hundreds of feet in the air against gravity, and trick insects and other animals into helping them reproduce. They track the sun, recoil at a touch, and warn other plants of danger. In this class we will explore all these phenomena and more as we look at the basics of plant structure, function, evolution, classification, and ecology. This version of Botany Basics meets in person at the Arboretum in six two-hour sessions that allow for botanizing walks, lab activities, and discussion questions. Participants in the in-person class have access to the online sessions in case they have to miss a meeting.

This in-person intensive course fulfills the core Botany requirement for the Blue Ridge Naturalist and the Blue Ridge Eco Gardener Certificates of Merit.

Alexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master's degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin. She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists. Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  She has taught botany for over a decade and leads nature hikes in Western North Carolina for groups of all ages.
