Plants have many amazing abilities: they make their own food, pull water hundreds of feet in the air against gravity, and trick insects and other animals into helping them reproduce. They track the sun, recoil at a touch, and warn other plants of danger. In this class we will explore all these phenomena and more as we look at the basics of plant structure, function, evolution, classification, and ecology. The class is presented in an asynchronous lecture format with supplemental course materials. Discussion questions and practical exercises will be provided to reinforce the lecture material, including making observations in your own yard or neighborhood. Participants can sign up for supplemental botanizing and wildflower walks for further reinforcement of the lectures.

This asynchronous course fulfills the core Botany requirement for the Blue Ridge Naturalist and the Blue Ridge Eco Gardener Certificates of Merit.

Alexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master's degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin. She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists. Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  She has taught botany for over a decade and leads nature hikes in Western North Carolina for groups of all ages.
