In recognition of April as World Landscape Architecture month, we invite Lauren Henry, curator of interpretation at Biltmore, to join us for a special Golden Hour Talk in the Arboretum’s Library, to celebrate Frederick Law Olmsted, considered the father of landscape architecture in America, and discuss the far-reaching impact of his influence, including the idea for an arboretum located in Western North Carolina!

The landscapes of the present-day Biltmore Estate remain a testament to the man who envisioned them in the late 19th century: Frederick Law Olmsted, recognized as the father of landscape architecture in America. Biltmore continues to be a remarkably well-preserved example of Olmsted’s genius, as well as one of the last great works of his illustrious career as America’s “park maker.” Part of his unfulfilled vision for Biltmore included an arboretum of national importance—finally realized through the creation of The North Carolina Arboretum almost a hundred years later.

Drawing upon collections in the Biltmore Archives, Lauren Henry will share insights into the collaboration of Olmsted, George W. Vanderbilt, and Richard Morris Hunt to create Biltmore Estate, a National Historic Landmark now enjoyed by more than a million guests annually. Time permitting, participants will enjoy a walk down the Grand Promenade with Lauren to look for examples of Omsted’s Seven S’s in place in the gardens and grounds, and pause at the larger-than-life-size bronze statue of Olmsted created by Sculptor Zenos Frudakis, installed on the Blue Ridge Court in 2016.

Lauren Henry is the Curator of Interpretation at Biltmore. Her work within the curatorial team centers on researching and sharing Biltmore’s rich history through tours, publications, exhibits, and more. One of her recent projects involved developing a new collection of interpretive signs for guests detailing the work and influence of Frederick Law Olmsted around the estate.

Prior to joining Biltmore’s Museum Services team in 2016, Lauren earned an undergraduate degree in Anthropology and International Studies from Illinois Wesleyan University and a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
